London Fire : People still trapped/Building might collapse

Firefighters battled a massive fire in a 27-floor high-rise apartment building in west London for several hours Wednesday. London’s Metropolitan Police said a number of people were being treated for a range of injuries, but did not provide more specifics. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said on Twitter that a major incident had been declared. Flames and smoke were still shooting from the windows of the Grenfell Tower in North Kensington more than four hours after the blaze started around 1 a.m. London time. It was not clear if there were residents trapped, but people at the scene spoke of not being able to reach friends and family who had been inside. Nassima Boutrig, who lives opposite the building, said she was awakened by sirens and smoke so thick that it filled her home as well. “We saw the people screaming,” she said. “A lot of people said ‘Help, help, help.’ The fire brigade could only help downstairs. It was fire up, up, up. They couldn’t stop the fire.” Boutrig said her fri...

Panama Establishes Ties With China, Further Isolating Taiwan

Taiwan — Panama has severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan in favor of recognizing China, the latest in a series of developments adding to the island’s isolation on the world stage. Only 19 countries and the Vatican now recognize Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China. Many of those countries are in Central America, including Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and the decision by Panama, announced on Monday, appeared to put those relationships in doubt. China refuses to have diplomatic ties with countries that officially recognize Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory and has threatened to annex by force, if necessary. Since 1945, Taiwan has been ruled by the Republic of China government, which lost the Chinese civil war and fled the mainland in 1949. The news is a major setback for Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen. She visited Panama last summer, shortly after taking office, for the inauguration of President Juan Carlos Varela and the opening of ...

Israeli court orders journalist to pay Netanyahu couple damages for libel

An Israeli court on Sunday ordered a journalist to pay 115,000 shekels (about 32,500 U.S. dollars) in damages to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara for defaming them. The Tel Aviv Magistrate Court ruled that Igal Sarna libeled the Netanyahu's in a post on Facebook, in which he claimed that Sara Netanyahu kicked Benjamin Netanyahu out of the car during a night ride from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Sarna is a senior journalist with Yedioth Ahronot, one of Israel's largest newspaper that often voices critical views of Netanyahu. The Netanyahu's sued Sarna for 280,000 shekels (about 79,200 dollars.) In March, they appeared in court to testify against Sarna. Sarna claimed that he has a source to support his claims. However, the court ruled his post was aimed at harming Netanyahu and his wife. Following the verdict, the Netanyahu's said that justice was served and Sarna said he is considering appealing against the court's ruling.  #Xinhua

Comey told Senate in a hearing Trump administration's explanations for his firing confusing and concerning

Former Director of Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) James Comey said Thursday that he was confused over the circumstances under which he was fired. Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee in a hearing that the Trump administration had offered "shifting explanations" for his firing, which was confusing and concerning. "It confused me when I saw on television the president saying that he actually fired me because of the Russia investigation," he said. "I was also confused by the initial explanation that was offered publicly, that I was fired because of the decisions I had made during the election year," Comey said. "The administration then chose to defame me and, more importantly, the FBI by saying that the organization was in disarray," Comey said. British voters sleepwalking toward painful Brexit with no good options in sight

British voters are sleepwalking to a painful  British . Prime Minister Theresa May called the election scheduled for Thursday to give herself a stronger hand in negotiating the country's departure from the European Union. But she and her main opponent, Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn, have largely avoided any discussion of the trade-offs involved. May's government has already ditched the rose-tinted versions of British put forward by campaigners in last year's referendum. Britain will leave the EU single market and customs union. It will therefore need to negotiate the outlines of a new deal before the end of March 2019. Any agreement will involve compromises about trade, contributions to EU coffers, and regulation of industries like financial services. Whatever shape those take, Britain's economic relationship with the EU will face greater friction.Failure to reach a deal would be the worst outcome. Most UK exports would need to be checked before crossing the bor...
